For the convenience of ostlers, ranchers and horsemasters, the following list of Middle-earthean horse breeds has been created.
Note: One "hand" is equivalent to 0.33 feet.
Bred in the White Mountains, these ponies stand on average about twelve =
hands as middling size pony. They are renown for their steady footing and
strong, wide bodies that serve well as they tramp through the craggy lands =
they
usually live in. Despite their small size, their strength allows them to ca=
rry
full size riders or carry heavy loads. Rumor holds they are the most popula=
r
breed of pony with Dwarves, if they could ever convince a man of Rohan to
sell them one.
The smallest of all horses known to Men, these curiously small (only thr=
ee
feet high at maximum) long-haired ponies are suitable only for riding by
Halflings or the children of Men. Friendly and small, they are at times kep=
t
as companion animals by Hobbits or the Men of Bree and trained to pull smal=
l
carts or wagons.
Known as altans - golden horses, these shiny golden-hued stallions and <=
br>
mares are known for being keen and fast. Spare in mane and tail, they have =
a sleek, lean look and rumor stands that they can survive three days in the=
harsher desert climes of Rhun without water. Rumor holds that these were on=
ce
the preferred steeds of the fierce Easterling Wainriders of days of yore. <=
br>
Rarely if ever used as beasts of burden, these are horses for speed and war=
.
Traditional horses of Gypsies and utilized to pull their wagons in days =
of
old. Strong and tall, they are often piebald hued of mixed colors with shag=
gy
manes and forelocks. Fair in mood and temperament, they will easily graze o=
n
hedgerows and low grass and move carts, riders, or wagons with ease.
The Rohirrim, the Horse Lords know more about the raising and breeding o=
f
horses than any other host of Men known in Middle Earth.
Large draft horses with deep chestnut coats and long flowing flaxen mane=
s.
Used as wood-pulling horses from the eaves of Fangorn Forest or used for ca=
rt
or riding they are gentle and of good-nature, and serve as warhorses for Ri=
ders
who do not have a finer horse.
Dun-colored draft horses used for farm and field. Their large, slightly =
oversized heads give them an almost pony-like with their stocky, short-legg=
ed
bodies. They are the horse of Rohan most commonly seen outside of the lands=
for their hard work at carrying either rider or load. They stand from 13 to=
14
hands.
A breed of horses that seemingly share bloodline with the Tinker horses =
of
Dorwinion, these large, strong horses are set with shaggy manes and white <=
br>
feathery forelocks their breed name - white feathers - speaking to that fac=
t.
The preferred horses of Riders of Rohan, these fine graceful horses are =
known for their beauty and their long stride. Excellent at racing, welfare,=
and riding they are rarely found outside of Rohan but some of their stock h=
as
bred the finer lines of warhorses found in Gondor. Riders generally prefer =
the
chestnut bloodlines for uniformity, but all black lines are also known of.<=
/p>
Small compared to the rest of the true horses of Rohan (only 12 hands on=
average), these mousy grey (blue dun) coated horses run in small wild herds=
on
the edges of the Westfold though some of their numbers are occasionally cau=
ght
and introduced into a more domesticated herd. They are the ancestors of the=
more commonly known Lusef horses, and it is with them they are often interb=
red.
Once found in wild herds in the Entwash Marsh, these hardy ponies are sm=
all
- only 10 to 11 hands who love to forage for heather, moss, and other small=
plants. Coming in a variety of hues and colors, they are maintained still f=
or
use as draught animals in the more marshy areas of Rohan, and for their uni=
que
ability to herd and lead smaller livestock like sheep, goats, and pigs.

The Maeras are a proud, and noble race of horse that are gifted
with abnormal intelligence and strength. Their origins lead back to
a great horse known as Felarof. Felarof was a wild beast, captured by
Leod of Eotheod in the Third Age, and tamed by King Eorl, Leod's son
(and the founder of Rohan in III 2510). The stallion Felarof was later
bred to create the Maeras.
The Maeras would only allow themselves to be ridden by the Lord of the <=
br>
Mark or one of his sons. The wizard Gandalf would break this rule by
training Shadowfax, a Maeras of incredible might and wit.
The Maeras are an extremely rare breed. Until the founding of Rohan in <=
br>
2510, there was only one Maeras - Felarof. From the year 2510 and on,
the Maeras would be owned only by the King of the Mark, his sons, and
the Grey Pilgrim. The Maeras are usually white in color, and can grow
to a height of 18 hands.
